Official definitions. Where the Bureau disagrees with a dictionary, the dictionary is mistaken.
- B-side
- The other side. The one the subject insists is better, and has insisted on at length.
- Bootleg
- A recording the Bureau did not authorise and has therefore listened to carefully.
- Comping
- Supportive accompaniment. Unlike the Bureau.
- Crate digging
- A search, with consequences for shelf space.
- Dead wax
- Where the evidence hides.
- Deep cut
- A cry for help.
- Encore
- A request the band has already agreed to. See also: Chief of Encore Affairs.
- Gapless
- A promise the Bureau is not in a position to keep.
- Liner notes
- Reading material, in the loosest sense. Compulsory for the Bureau.
- Needle drop
- A deliberate act, and a small admission.
- Remaster
- The same album, louder, and a new opinion.
- Scrobble
- A confession.
- Sideman
- A person who plays on records and is never mentioned at parties.
- Shuffle
- Randomness, as defined by someone who will not accept it.
